Better Understand the Law

How should I prepare for a tax attorney for the first time?

It’s a good idea to pull all your documentation together for the case evaluation, but it’s mandatory for a meeting with your tax attorney. Your lawyer can only help you if he or she has all the information.

  • Jot down all your questions or concerns.
  • Collect all relevant documentation such as the last 3 to 5 years of income tax returns, all gift tax returns, any communications from the IRS or any other taxing authority, your estate planning documents, and your business formation documents.
  • Be ready to disclose everything. Attorney client communications are confidential and your attorney can only help you if he or she has all the facts. You must disclose all the facts, even if you think they would make you look bad.
  • Also collect anything that your tax attorney asks you to bring to the meeting. There is sure to be something additional for your particular case.
