Maine Attorneys and Lawyer Information

By Editor, Attorneys.org

The Maine Supreme Judicial Court defines the Maine rules of Professional Conduct for Maine Attorneys. The mission of the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar is to encourage and promote ethical and competent practice by the lawyers of the Maine Bar Association. These rules and standards are widely known to the public to generate confidence in the legal system of Maine.

The various rules of the mission of the Maine legal system include registering and regulating the attorney members who are licensed to practice in Maine, enforcing a strict code of conduct to the Maine Attorneys, providing and approving continual educational programs on the legal system and law and guiding the attorneys on various legal and ethical issues through the Professional Ethics Commission and other systems. The board also defines the rules of informing the public and clients about their rights and other rules concerning the behavior of the attorneys and other important issues.  All the attorneys in Maine also need to follow the legal standards of Maine met by the Maine Judicial Court.

Maine Attorneys actively volunteer in various projects. The Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project is a non-profit legal aid organization which was started to provide free legal information, representation and assistance in civil legal matters to the low income population. The project has various community and attorney volunteers as its members. The organization is managed by a small administration staff. The idea of the organization is to provide justice as an equal right among all people by making ‘justice for all’ a reality.

The volunteers work for providing all the necessary tools, support and knowledge about the Maine justice system. The various projects include protecting the Maine homeowners from illegal predatory lending, giving support, representation and knowledge to people who were denied unemployment benefits and helping low income tax payers to represent their problems and constraints in living a dignified and comfortable life. The Maine idea of this project is to provide the right of equal justice regardless of the income of the client. They serve the clients who have a household income below 125% of the federal poverty level. The clients must also be citizens of Maine and should meet the citizenship requirements defined by Maine federal rules. The organization, however, does not serve people who are imprisoned.
The Maine Attorneys in the organization take up legal issues like family law matters, foreclosure, bankruptcy, social security disability, unemployment compensation and others.
