Hiring a music attorney

Hiring a music attorney or lawyer

If you do a web search it will not be difficult to find a music attorney. Before you actually start interviewing the attorneys, ask your fellow musicians how they carried out their Music attorney and lawyer search. Upon their advice try to contact organizations like BMI or ASCAP which can also help you with attorneys related to your profession.

There are certain points that you should keep in mind. The attorney you select should be always available to you when you need him. He may not be in your town but should be available by phone.

The next point to consider is to arrange an interview appointment. During the interview, you should ask the following questions to the music attorney:
•    About his practice: If the attorney you are hiring has a specialization in music law, give him the first preference. Again there is a broad category in music law. Check if he will be comfortable handling royalty issues, copyright problems and if he would be able to negotiate for publishing and recording deals.
•    Check his list of clientele: Check if he has previously worked for someone whom you know. If so, try to contact that person to learn the capabilities of this attorney and his experiences with him. Many search results also offer the profile of the lawyer and his clients. You may check this at the initial stage as well.
•    Experience Matters: How much experience your attorney has would enable you to be confident in his abilities and skills. Is his experience in the same areas of music as you would need?
•    Cost of Service: Ensure that his cost of service comes within your budget and you do not end up paying him more. You should also check his rates and payment arrangements. One should not pay more than $500 even to the best of attorneys. Check if he would expect postage, phone and other such expenses or are they included in the rate fixed.

The next step of your interview could be the negotiation of fees as well. Most of the attorneys negotiate if they like the deal. If you like the attorney, you may negotiate in that meeting. You must not only negotiate the fees but other services the attorney would provide. You may jot down the points regarding the strengths and weaknesses of each attorney and finally decide the music attorney you find the best to hire.
