Normally when you have a case to fight in court you opt for an attorney search instead of choosing to be represented by the court appointed attorneys due to the myriad of myths that surround them including that they may not be real lawyers or that they work for the court instead of the client. We fail to understand that instead of doing an attorney search if we choose these attorneys, especially if we have a case of gross misdemeanor, we may be more likely to benefit. All we need to have is an open mind and positive outlook about them about.

Cases that are managed in the municipal or district level courts and usually involve a fine or incarceration of a few days or weeks. The public defender or the court appointed attorneys are best to handle these cases since they do this on a daily basis.

The DUI clients and DUI laws are well known to public defenders and since their knowledge of different motions and how the judge handles them are exceptional; the public defender may be the best representative for you.  In choosing the public defender (PD) who has vast knowledge of his task in how to handle documents, call for a case, build rapport with the prosecution, dismiss and point out a problem you may have accepted the best advice available.
If you compare the court appointed attorneys with their private counterparts, you will notice that some attorneys are new to the judge and the courtroom itself. They may not have handled many DUI cases and may not be well aware of recent changes or amendments. This attorney may not have an established rapport with the prosecutor resulting in more time and extra court dates as well as charging you higher prices.

Usually, the best choice for your case could be a public defender but you should ensure that the lawyer you have selected is dedicated and experienced. If you are short of funds, the best way to go forward with the case is to let the court appoint an attorney for you. Meet with your lawyer and see how he plans to handle your case.
Unlike the myths that surrounds the court appointed attorneys, if they are friendly and respectful that may mean that they are very professional in their business, respected by his colleagues and has strong professional relationship with the Bar members which could be a benefit to you.
